Whether you are coming to Unique Threading Salon for a facial wax, leg wax, or Brazilian, it’s important to prepare your skin for waxing with exfoliation. Exfoliation is used to remove dead skin cells which makes the hair more prominent and easier to fully remove, meaning that you will be smoother for longer. Additionally, by removing dead skin cells through exfoliation, you can prevent unsightly and painful ingrown hairs. Clearly, exfoliation is the way to go; however, there is a proper method to exfoliation to prevent harm to your skin.
Use The Right Supplies
First, you want to make sure that you have an exfoliating scrub. If you are waxing your body, use a body wash with exfoliating properties. If you are waxing your chin, eyebrows, or lip, you need a separate face exfoliant that won’t be too harsh on the delicate skin on your face. You can find a good exfoliant at any beauty supply or drug store, or you could make your own sugar scrub at home! You may also consider investing in exfoliation tools for an even better effect. Dry brushes make for amazing exfoliators and can be used both in and out of the shower. Exfoliating gloves can be a great way to exfoliate in the shower. Even if you just wish to use a washcloth, when paired with your new body scrub, you can very effectively exfoliate your body. Just avoid loofahs, which are not only too rough on your skin, they tend to breed tons of mold and bacteria.
Use the Right Strategy
Exfoliation doesn’t simply require the right tools; you must also implement the right strategy. First, apply an oil or a moisturizer to your skin. Then, if you have one, use your dry brush on your skin, gently brushing your skin in small circles, starting from the bottom and working your way up. Once you have finished that, get into the shower and apply your body scrub in the same motion, using your exfoliating gloves or washcloth. Use warm water to wash the scrub off. If you tend to get ingrown hairs or acne, it is wise to use a body wash that contains salicylic acid for prevention. After you’ve rinsed your body wash off, step out of the shower, pat dry, and apply your moisturizer.
Use a Moisturizer
The last, and most important, step to exfoliation is moisturization. This is important when preparing for waxing because you do not want your skin and hair to be dry. Dry hair is more susceptible to breaking during waxing, which means that it won’t be fully removed. This will make it more likely that you develop ingrown hairs, and will force you to have to get waxed earlier than you would have had your skin not been so dry. Avoid this annoying problem by regularly exfoliating and moisturizing in the week leading up to your appointment. However, it is important that you DO NOT exfoliate or moisturize within 24 hours of your appointment. Exfoliation will make your skin too sensitive for waxing, and moisturization will interfere with wax, making it more difficult to remove hairs.
